November 2004 - The Double Single listed in 10 of the Best Blended Whiskies in the world

Tuesday 20th July 2004 saw the bottling of The "Double Single", a truly unique limited edition whisky exclusively for the Craigellachie Hotel of Speyside.

"The Double Single" is a limited bottling of just 600 bottles, each individually numbered. It is a careful combination of two casks, hand selected by John Glaser, the blender and founder of Compass Box.

\In March 2004 we visited John's offices in London to taste several prototypes and eventually decided on a 'blend', but a very different one ~ a single cask of Single Grain married with a single cask of Single Malt. Different combinations of grain and malt whiskies were tasted over the weeks until John came up with this one. That was it, the master blender had discovered perfection!

He had combined a lovely 12 year old, American oak-aged malt whisky from a famed 'northern Highland distillery near Brora', with a gorgeous, rich and sweet 15 year old grain whisky from the now silent Cambus distillery.

As John says: "This whisky really turns the idea of a blended Scotch on its head. The grain is really the star here. It wraps its rich, sweet vanilla characters around the distinctive character of the malt whisky like a silk robe."

The name was easy ~ a single grain and a single malt? ~ obviously The "Double Single"!

It is available to buy by the nip (25ml) in our Quaich Bar at a special introductory price of £3.25 and for £39.75 per bottle (70cl).
